Cider & Perry

One of CAMRA’s secondary focuses is real cider and perry. CAMRA define real cider and perry as being fermented from the whole juice of fresh pressed apples or pears, without the use of concentrated (boiling the juice to evaporate the water) or chaptalised (adding additional sugar before fermentation) juices which are processes used within a lot of mainstream cider and perry production.

Did you know?

CAMRA spotlights the celebration of cider and perry in May and October. The month of May was chosen as this is, typically, the month that orchards come into bloom, the apples and pears begin to set, and the previous year's harvest matures. October represents the month that the fruits are typically harvested and milled, and the fermentation process begins.

The Drink Greener campaign supports biodiversity. Because of the biodiversity found, traditionally managed orchards have been designated as ‘priority habitats’ by the Government since 2007. Thousands of plant and animal species, some endangered, can all thrive among apple and pear trees so supporting local, real producers, is also supporting a whole host of British wildlife.
